A former police officer has been given an eight-month suspended jail sentence for abusing his previous partner.


Kyle Millar, 28, whose address was given as c/o Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) head office, Knock, Belfast, last month admitted one charge of domestic abuse in between February 2022 and March 2023.


Millar, who had been suspended on complete pay before being sacked last month, was in a relationship with his victim for one year and 7 months when the abuse occurred.


Sentencing at Londonderry Magistrates' Court on Friday, District Judge Oonagh Mullan stated his angering had actually had a substantial effect on the lady.


Gambling dependency


At a previous hearing in January, the court was informed Millar had actually subjected the lady to "mental torture" by calling her names and buffooning her look.


Millar was said to have had a gaming dependency and the victim had actually given him in between ₤ 5,000 and ₤ 6,000.

'Struggling to move forward'


On Friday, Judge Mullan said "this was an extremely regrettable set of scenarios both for the victim and the offender to find themselves in such a circumstance".


The judge said the lady was still struggling to move on and was also still getting treatment since of the psychological health difficulties resulting from his offending.


She told Millar: "It was a really unfortunate incident which has effected on both of you. The victim went through treatment by you which she must not have actually undergone.


"Because of that you are now in an unfortunate situation in that you are no longer in work."


Millar was given 8 months in jail suspended for three years.


Speaking after Millar's sentencing, the PSNI stated he had been a serving officer at the time of his angering and had actually been dismissed after a "quick internal investigation" its expert standards department.


"Anyone who abuse criminal offenses of any nature in our neighborhood, no matter who they are or what role they play in society, they will be examined thoroughly and brought before the courts," Det Ch Insp Claire Gilbert said.


"As an authorities service, we expect the highest requirements of professionalism and stability from all of our law enforcement officer, both on and off duty, in accordance with the requirements consisted of in the Police Service of Northern Ireland's code of principles."


Gilbert said the PNSI had actually "shown again today, that there is no space in our cops service for people who devote any wrongdoing".
