Rachel Reeves left the door open up to an increase in betting taxes after Gordon Brown advised her to raise levies to cover the cost of raising the two-child benefit cap.

"So I speak with Gordon regularly, and saw him last week when I remained in Scotland," she stated.

"Like Gordon, I am deeply concerned around the levels of child poverty in Britain. No kid must mature hungry or parents not have the ability to afford the essentials for their family.

"We're a Labour Government. Of course, we care about child poverty. That's why one of the first things we did as a government was to set up a task force that will be reporting in the autumn and (will) respond to it then."

She included: "On gaming taxes, we have actually already released a review into gambling taxes. We're taking proof on that at the minute, and once again, we'll set out our policies in the typical method, in our budget plan later this year."

Reforms to betting levies could produce the ₤ 3.2 billion required to ditch the two-child limit and benefit cap, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) stated.

The think tank's newest research study said axing the policies could raise half a million kids out of hardship and "reverse years of increasing challenge for low-income families".

Giving his support to the report, Mr Brown, an image of whom Ms Reeves supposedly kept in her bed room as a student, said it would be the "very first important step in the war we should wage against kid poverty".

The Government is anticipated to publish a child hardship method in the autumn, and project groups have said it should include a dedication to abandon the two-child limit.

But a spokesperson for the Betting and Gaming Council rejected the "economically reckless, factually misinforming" proposals which "risk driving huge numbers to the growing, risky, uncontrolled betting black market, which does not protect consumers and contributes absolutely no tax".

They added: "Further tax rises, fresh off the back of Government reforms which cost the sector over a billion in lost revenue, would do more harm than excellent, for punters, jobs, growth and public finances."
