The dad of a guy who took his own life after becoming addicted to gaming has called the refusal of a 24-hour wagering shop in Spalding a "small victory that will ripple throughout other neighborhoods".

Merkur Slots lost its preparation appeal to open 24 hr a day at its Hall Place location last week.

Dismissing the operator's appeal, the Planning Inspectorate stated it found "damage in respect of the impact on the living conditions of neighbouring residents" and there was "restricted benefits of the proposition".

Charles Ritchie, who established national charity Gambling with Lives with his better half Liz after their son Jack's death in 2017, invited the choice and said the "tide is turning versus" huge casino companies.

In July 2022, Merkur Slots was approved consent to operate from 07:00 to midnight Mondays to Saturdays and 10:00 to midnight on Sundays.

But the company wanted to eliminate those limitations and defended the rights to stay open all hours.

Planners turned down the quote on March 12, stating a 24-hour operation would adversely affect neighbouring citizens with regard to "sound and disturbance".

Ritchie said it was "good news for Spalding" and he was happy viewpoints by residents had been acted upon.

"Up until recently, there's been a kind of sensation of anguish. You can't do anything.

"So I think this is a small triumph, but it is a message and it is something that does have ripples across other neighborhoods."

Merkur Slots has actually been approached for comment.

The Ritchie family, from Sheffield, have been campaigning for gambling market reform since the Hull University graduate killed himself while fighting a gaming dependency.

In 2022, the coroner ruled the 24-year-old teacher had actually been failed by "woefully insufficient" cautions and treatments.

His moms and dads have actually long argued that gambling-related suicide is directly connected to addicting wagering items and the industry's "predatory" marketing practices.
