It's been a busy yr within the lighting aisle, with the debut of new, low-cost LED gentle bulbs that promise to chop your own home's power draw without breaking the bank. The latest, from GE, is the Brilliant Stik LED, which bucks the bulb altogether in favor of a push-pop-shaped build. The fee: $10 for a three-pack (a GE consultant tells me that they do not plan on promoting the bulbs individually simply yet). Like the opposite major participant on the cheap end of the spectrum, the Philips 60W Substitute LED , the Vivid Stik presents a fairly compelling value proposition. While a 60W incandescent will add about $7 per yr to your EcoLight energy invoice, the 10W Brilliant Stik will add simply $1.20. Spend $10 on that three-pack and use them for a yr, and your complete cost is $13.60. Spend a buck on three incandescents, and you may end up spending another $21 over the course of the yr -- after which you'll need to replace them, since that's about as long as they final.

The Vivid Stiks will last nicely over a decade. There are a few commerce-offs, though. The Bright Stik is not fairly as shiny or as efficient as different LEDs and, just like the Philips bulb, it is not an option that'll work with dimmer switches. Nonetheless, it is a really stable fit for primary lighting setups, and at a price of about $three per bulb (or, um,"Stik"), it is a very stable value, too. If I simply needed to replace one gentle, I might in all probability stick to Philips, but when I'm changing my bulbs in bulk, EcoLight products I am going to offer the Brilliant Stik some critical consideration. The GE Brilliant Stik isn't the first large model LED that desires you to assume outside the bulb. For over a year now, the flattened-down Philips SlimStyle LED has been selling on Residence Depot shelves, and its success might function proof of concept for the odd-trying Shiny Stik LED. You will quickly see the two promoting side-by-aspect in the home Depot lighting aisle.

Nonetheless, the SlimStyle LED at the least attempts to approximate the general silhouette of a gentle bulb (from sure angles, anyway). With the Brilliant Stik LED, you're all in on newfangled design, no incandescent nostalgia mandatory. Whether or not that is a good thing is solely as much as you. We're in all probability lacking the point, though. Bulb or EcoLight energy no bulb, the Vibrant Stik remains to be, nicely, a light bulb. Normally, you're not going to see the thing after you screw it in and EcoLight energy lower the lampshade. The form factor really does not matter a lot in and of itself. What does matter is how that kind factor impacts the quality of light, which is the place my issues lied as I prepared to check the Vibrant Stik out. None of that cylindrical plastic is angled downward, the way the underside half of a spherical bulb is. I questioned if that may keep the Bright Stik from casting the sort of downward gentle folks usually choose to read under.

Luckily, that wasn't the case. With the LED hidden under a lampshade, I couldn't distinguish the standard of the Vibrant Stik's light from another commonplace, omnidirectional bulb. That applies to the feel and appear of the light, too. At 2,850 Okay, it is as heat and yellowy as you'd anticipate from a standard, household mild (a 5,000 Okay "daylight" version is on the market, EcoLight products too, for an extra buck). The 760-lumen gentle output -- whereas a bit in need of the perfect 800 lumen benchmark for a 60W substitute -- is plenty bright for many fundamental needs. Actually, the only difference this design makes is on GE's finish -- the slimmed down figure makes it a breeze to bundle the Vivid Stik, and easier for GE to ship them in bulk (especially when packaged three at a time). All of that helps shave cents off the upfront value, and there's nothing to not like about that.
